Words & Music: bio Helen H. Lemmel, 1922 (MIDI, score).
This hymn was first published in Glad Songs, by the British National Sunday School Union. Its lyrics were inspired by the Gospel tract Focused, by Lilias Trotter, which included these words:
So then, turn your eyes upon Him, look full into His face and you will find that the things of earth will acquire a strange new dimness.
Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus
O soul, are you weary and troubled?
No light in the darkness you see?
There’s a light for a look at the Savior,
And life more abundant and free!
Refrain
Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of His glory and grace.
Through death into life everlasting
He passed, and we follow Him there;
Over us sin no more hath dominion—
For more than conquerors we are!
Refrain
His Word shall not fail you—He promised;
Believe Him, and all will be well:
Then go to a world that is dying,
His perfect salvation to tell!
Refrain
Dear Kevin,
I also enjoyed the link to Cynthia Clawson singing Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus. I needed to hear it because I had a bad afternoon. Thank you and God bless you.

Hi Donna,
You are so right! We need to keep our focus and eyes on Jesus. This song has been playing over and over in my head for days now. I’m glad as it reminds me where to focus.
Yes, we will have troubles in this world but Jesus said He has overcome the world. John 16:33 (NIV) I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But, take heart! I have overcome the world.”
My heart is thankful that Jesus has lead the way for us.
Blessings,
Bonnie

Thank you Bonnie for posting this song. I’ve loved this song for so long and I think the old time hymnals share some of the most heartfelt songs that make you want to just sing your heart out. 🙂 What this song means to me is that when troubles come, as they always will, to look to Jesus for our help, not to the world. Let the world slip away while we pray to the Lord for comfort and for results. Keep your focus on Jesus and nothing else will matter.
Love,
Donna
