Beautiful Snow

In the early part of the Civil War, one dark Saturday morning in the dead of winter, a young woman, twenty-two years old, died at the Commercial Hospital, Cincinnati.  She had once been beautiful and the pride of respectable parents.  Highly educated and accomplished, she might have shone in the best society.  But she was stubborn and willful and would not listen to warning.  She played with fire and called it “fun”.  One day she awoke to find herself ruined by a fatal mistake which she could not erase.  She was fallen.

She spent the rest of her young life in disgrace and shame, and died poor and friendless, a broken-hearted outcast.  Among her personal effects was found in manuscript, the poem, “Beautiful Snow” which was immediately carried to Enos B. Reed, editor the the National Union.  In the columns of that paper, on the morning following the girl’s death, the poem appeared in print for the first time.  When the paper containing the poem came out on Sunday morning, the body of the victim had not yet received burial.  The attention of Thomas Buchanan Read, one of the first American poets, was soon directed to the newly published lines, and was so taken with their stirring pathos, that he immediately followed the corpse to its final resting place.

Such are the plain facts concerning her whose “Beautiful Snow” will be long regarded as one of the brightest gems in American literature.

Beautiful Snow

Oh! the snow, the beautiful snow,
Filling the sky and earth below,
Over the housetops, over the street,
Over the heads of the people you meet.
Dancing–Flirting–Skimming along,
Beautiful snow, it can do no wrong.
Clinging to lips in frolicsome freak,
Trying to kiss a fair lady’s cheek,
Beautiful snow from heaven above,
Pure as an angel, gentle as love.

Oh! the snow, the beautiful snow,
How the flakes gather and laugh as they go,
Whirling about in maddening fun,
Cheering the heart and dispelling the gloom.
Chasing–Laughing–Hurrying by,
It lightens the face and sparkles the eye.
Rollicking dogs with a bark and a bound,
Snap at the crystals which eddy around.
The town is alive and its heart in a glow,
To welcome the coming of beautiful snow!

How wildly the crowd goes swaying along,
Hailing each other with humor and song,
How gay are the sleighs, like the stars flashing by,
Are bright for a moment, then lost to the eye.
Ringing–Swinging–Dashing they go,
Over the crest of the beautiful snow,
Snow that’s so pure when it fall from the sky,
That it makes one regret that it’s fated to lie
And be trampled and muddied by thousands of feet,
‘Til it blends with the horrible filth of the street.

Once I was pure as the snow, but I fell,
Fell like the snowflakes from heaven to hell;
Fell to be trampled as filth of the street,
Fell to be scoffed at, to be spit on and beat,
Pleading–Cursing–Dreading to die,
Selling my soul to whoever would buy,
Dealing in shame for a morsel of bread,
Hating the living and fearing the dead.
Merciful God! have I fallen so low?
And yet I was once like the beautiful snow.

Once I was fair as the beautiful snow,
With an eye like a crystal, and heart like its glow,
Once I was loved for my innocent grace,
Flattered and sought for the charms of my face.
Father–Mother–Sisters–All,
God and myself I have lost by my fall.
The vilest wretch that goes shivering by,
Will make a wide sweep lest I wander to nigh;
for all that is on or above me, I know
There is nothing so pure as the beautiful snow.

How strange it should be that this beautiful snow,
Should fall on a sinner with nowhere to go!
How strange it should be when the night comes again;
If the snow and the ice struck my desperate brain.
Fainting–Freezing–Dying alone,
Too wicked for prayer, too weak for a moan,
To be heard in the streets of the crazy town,
Gone mad in the joy of the snow coming down!
To be and to die in my terrible woe,
With a bed and a shroud of the beautiful snow.

Helpless and foul as the trampled snow,
Sinner, despair not, Christ stoopeth low,
To rescue the soul that is lost in sin,
And raise it to life and enjoyment again.
Groaning–Bleeding–Dying for thee,
The Crucified hung on the cursed tree,
His accents of mercy fall soft on thine ear.
“Is there mercy for me?  Will He heed my weak prayer?”
O God! in the stream that for sinners did flow,
Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

Recently we welcomed into our family a new grandson.  It is always an extremely exciting time when a new baby is born.  We think about what that little one might be when he grows up and pray he has a long and happy life.

But, when God sent baby Jesus into this world He had other thoughts on His mind.  Jesus was actually born to die.  Yes, that’s right.  He was born to die!  That was God’s plan from the start.  That doesn’t sound too loving does it?  But wait let’s think about his for a minute.

If God had not sent Jesus into this world to die for our sins then we would not have a wonderful future laid out before us.  We would be eternally damned to hell.  He came to die so that we might have life.  Everlasting life that is.  That is the most unselfish, loving, kind and gracious thing God could do for us.

Because we have all sinned and come short of the glory of God we cannot come into God’s presence.

(Romans 3:23)  for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

God cannot look on sin because He is holy.  There is a great gap between us and God because of sin.  Therefore, God sent His beloved Son Jesus to come to us in the form of a little baby to bridge that gap.  Jesus grew up and when the time came He obediently suffered on the cross the total payment each of us owed God for our sins.  For God had said, the wages of sin is death.

(Romans 6:23)  For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

When we hear the Christmas story each year we marvel at the little babe in the manger.  We celebrate his birth but don’t usually think about his death.
Jesus didn’t live a long life by today’s standards.  He lived for about 30 years.  God sent him to pay the price.  He bought us with His own precious blood.  That is God’s most extraordinary Christmas gift to us and its also free.

He was born to die!

“The Christmas message is that there is hope for a ruined humanity–hope of pardon, hope of peace with God, hope of glory–because at the Father’s will Jesus Christ became poor, and was born in a stable so that 30 years later He might hang on a cross.”  J. I Packer

thankful

It is time to celebrate Thanksgiving again, and I’ve been thinking.

I wonder how many people are thankful to God on Thanksgiving?  I remember when I was growing up how much fun Thanksgiving was.  All of our family would get together at my folks house and we would have a feast.  My mom would cook for a couple of days ahead getting food ready. We would have turkey and dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, winter squash, baked beans, homemade pickles, cranberry sauce, olives, and for desert pies and homemade banana bread. (It makes me hungry just thinking about it.)

The men usually would go out hunting for deer in the morning and then when they came in for dinner would be really hungry and would share stories of the deer they saw but couldn’t get a shot at.   I used to love to hear all the hunting stories.

I recall the guys would actually make gluttons of themselves having contests to see who could eat the most.

Those are fond memories of family as we celebrated together.  But, you know what, I think we were thankful for all the wonderful food we had, but I can never remember that we ever prayed before we feasted or gave thanks to God for anything.  Now, that strikes me as sad.

After becoming a Christian I realized that God is the one who provides.

But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.(Philippians 4:19)

Yes, we can be thankful that we have a good job, that our family is healthy, that we have enough money.  We can be thankful for almost anything but God needs to be the object of our gratitude.  God has enabled us to work, to have a job, to make money.  He is the source of everything we have.

In Matthew 6:25-34 God tells us that we are more important than the birds and the flowers, and He provides for them.  He also tells us not to worry. Instead we need to be thankful for how He has provided for us by seeking Him and He will take care of us.

I had an email from a new Christian recently.  She can’t wait for Thanksgiving this year and said she has a new thankfulness now that she is closer to God.  She will look at the day in a new way this time.  Isn’t that great?

I pray each of you will be thankful this Thanksgiving holiday and that your gratitude will be directed toward God.

Christmasfloral

Do you ever get depressed around the holidays?  Many people do including myself. This year I decided I’d float through the holidays and just enjoy every minute.  Right!

I must explain that I have a physical handicap.  I have a serious eye muscle problem.  I’m only using one eye in order to avoid double vision.  This causes me to tire very quickly and I get many headaches.  The added pressures of the holiday season wear on me and I tend to dread them as my frustration level increases.

I’ve been trying to get into the swing of the holidays and yesterday set out to bake some wonderful Christmas cookies.  Well, after setting the smoke alarm off three times I gave up.  I can’t believe I burned up the Peanut Butter Blossoms.  They are now called Burnt Bottom Peanut Butter Blossoms.  Try saying that fast six times in a row.  🙂  My patience ran out, and my dh had to take over.  I thank for Lord for a wonderful husband who came to the rescue.

That was the second cookie failure in less than a week.  A few days ago I attempted some Pecan Tea Tassies.  I’ve never made them before, but they are one of my favorites and my niece said they were easy so I got busy.  To make a long story short, they didn’t turn out.

After my cookie failures it would be easy for me to sink into a depression, as I was fighting it in the first place.  It seems like such a waste of time and money, and I feel like I failed.  I know there must be a lesson here some place, but I’m not sure what it is right now.  Maybe it is to really appreciate how patient and kind my husband is.

Depression robs us of our joy at the holidays.  Why does this happen?  Many of us are over stressed at this time of year.  There are so many things to do, and the pressure mounts.  We have many parties and celebrations with family and friends.  We have too much to do and to little time.  Much is expected of us.  There is the financial pressure of how much to spend.  In some parts of the country the weather can be another factor weighing on our shoulders.

We need to clean, shop, bake, wrap gifts, order things, exchange things that we bought by mistake, watch for the best sales, make sure we have all the ingredients on hand for the holiday baking, buy groceries for the parties, get the kid’s teachers gifts, make sure they have everything for their school functions, and on and on it goes.  All of this is crammed into a very short period of time and it is no wonder it gets of us down.

There are other reasons why some people get depressed at this time of year.  Many people have lost loved ones near the holidays and all of those unpleasant memories are again stirred up.  They miss those who have gone on.  Some have panic disorder and even the thought of shopping, crowds, and parties can be debilitating.

Some are lonely as all the family has either moved far away or they don’t really have any family.  Christmas is a time for families.  There are all kinds of problems associated with holidays and family gatherings.

So, if you are one who is experiencing holiday depression you are not alone, that’s for sure.  If you are a Christian, then you most likely are adding guilt on top of depression.  As everyone knows, “Christians are not to be depressed!”

Reality is that anyone can get depressed.  The important thing is to learn how to deal with it.

Here are some ways to beat depression before depression beats you.

Here is a very important one:

1.  Check yourself.  See if there is any unconfessed sin in your life.  If so, get right with God.  Confess your sin and turn from it.  Are you holding grudges?  Is there someone in your family or at work you need to forgive or ask forgiveness of?

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9 NASB)

2. Think of others more highly than ourselves. We need to think of others needs before our own.  In other words, not be selfish.

For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think;  (Romans 12:3)

3.  Pray and ask God to fill you with the Holy Spirit and walk in his strength through the holidays making sure your actions and words are honoring to him.

4.  Be realistic.  Look at your schedule and see if it is overloaded.  Then, see where you can cut back. Give yourself a break.

5. Don’t be afraid to say no.  You can say “no,” if you have too much going on.  Use common sense.

6. Downsize.  We really don’t have to buy every new thing on the market for our kids and families.  Why not think about just getting one gift for each family member and take the rest of the money you would spend and give it to charity?  It’s a thought, and it might teach the children that it is better to give than receive.  It might be too late for this one this year, but what about next year?

7.  Take time to meditate on the real meaning of Christmas.  Listen to some relaxing Christmas music while sipping a hot cup of tea and enjoy a few Christmas cookies.  Hope they turned out better than mine.  Of course, my husband and I have to eat the Burnt Bottom Peanut Butter Blossoms!

The Lord wants us to have love in our hearts and joy in our lives this holiday season.  Remember the only one we really need to please is God himself.

May God bless you this holiday season!

The Christmas Cookie Man

THE CHRISTMAS COOKIE MAN
by Bonnie Lord

Just before Christmas, Mom baked a cookie man
She left him to cool on the new cookie pan.
Then, she went out to buy Billy a toy,
Because he had been a very good boy.

Jake, the dog, woke from his nap.
Then his nose twitched with a snap.
“Something smells good,
Like cookies should.”

Jake sniffed, and found the cookie man.
He laid right there on the cookie pan.
Jake nudged the pan, and it crashed to the floor.
Up jumped cookie man and slipped out the door.
Then a little voice said in his head.
“Run! Run! Cookie man!”

Cookie man ran all around.
His feet barely touched the ground.
Finally, after a slip and a fall,
He found himself right next to the mall.

Tired he slumped down on the curb.
A boy picked him up and he heard.
“Which shall I eat?
His head or his feet?”
Then a little voice said in his head.
“Run! Run! Cookie man.”

Cookie man breathed in a lot of air.
He let it all out with more to spare.
It let him slip from the little boy’s hand,
And he again heard, “Run! Run! Cookie man!”

In the mall kids were trimming a tree.
Cookie man walked on over to see.
A girl reached down and picked him up.
“I’ll put this cookie man near the top!”

She lifted him up, oh so high,
And cookie man let out a deep sigh.
Then, the little voice said.
“Safe at last Cookie man!”

Cookie man rests in the tree in the mall,
Where he can be seen by one and by all.
Kids walk by with their faces so pink,
And cookie man grins and gives them a wink.

CHRISTMAS TIME
By Bonnie Lord

This is the Christmas time of the year,
“Santa Claus,” and “be good,” that’s all we hear.
The first gift of Christmas God gave us all,
Jesus, His Son, was born in a stall.
Wise men and shepherds brought frankincense and myrrh,
While angels were proclaiming, “peace on earth!”
Now look at this world, and look at this land.
It looks like something went wrong with the plan.
Santa Claus came, stole Jesus away.
The donkey became reindeer and sleigh.
Greedy men get rich, minding their store.
While we rush about buying presents galore.
But, God is still there, He is within reach.
We must turn to Him and let Him teach.
He has a special gift for us this year.
It’s eternal life for all who believe and hear.
Our sins tho red as scarlet you know,
Will be washed whiter, yes whiter than snow.
Let’s put Christ back in Christmas for you and for me.
And remember the day He hung on the tree.
Know in our hearts He won’t let us down,
But, believe in Him and live for our crown.

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas vs. Happy Holidays by Donna S.

My views of Christmas may differ from others, but I was raised to say Merry Christmas.   Even before I was saved by Jesus, I knew it was because of Him that there even is a Christmas.   It’s about His birth.   Saying Happy Holiday’s is fine sometimes when you just pass someone on the street, but I think saying Merry Christmas puts Christ in Christmas.    It lets people know you are sincere when you say those words.

I remember when I was told there was no Santa Claus after all the young years of my life thinking of that fairy tale, to find out it wasn’t true was devastating at age 10.

I know that Jesus is not a fairy tale and that there is no disappointment in reading about His birth at Christmas time or anytime.  If not for His coming to this earth, we would be lost forever without hope of our souls reaching heaven when our life on earth is done.

It seems like this deciding between government and state and religion is ridiculous.    Why has it worked all these years and people were more happy with Merry Christmas and we buy a Christmas tree instead of a holiday tree?   If it’s a holiday tree, we could go out and buy one at any holiday of the year.   We could have a Thanksgiving tree in November,  a New Year’s tree in January, a 4th of July tree, a Labor Day tree, a Memorial Day tree.   All of these are holidays too.

To me, Christmas is not just a holiday, it is when our Savior and Lord Jesus Christ was born of the virgin Mary and the 3 wise men came and shepherds saw the Star as a sign.   He came to earth as a human to teach us to serve others and to live a life worthy of the calling of God.

This is my view of why we should say Merry Christmas.  We have for years and were happy before and to me, Happy Holidays just doesn’t mean anything but a passing sentiment.

Thanks-Giving

 Thanksgiving

This year I’m thankful for the ususal things; like how God provides for us, and for family and friends.  But this year I’m also extremely grateful for the wondeful grace of God as I had a serious health scare.

A few weeks ago I was diagnosed with nodules on my thyroid gland.  This was found in an examination where the dr. was looking for another problem.  The discovery led to several trips back to the city for ultrasounds and biopsies.  Finally, at the end of the process they told me the nodules were benign.  Praise the Lord!

I was so happy that I could hardly speak! During those few weeks I didn’t know what the future would be.  Would I be  told I had cancer?  Would that mean surgery?  Would it mean radiation and lots of tests and trips to the city during the winter when the roads were bad?  So many unknowns.

Our church family all prayed for me. My husband was sweet as he took me to all my appointments and waited patiently.  After each appointment he took me out to lunch just to make the day more enjoyable.

During this time I turned to the Lord and asked Him to be with me and get me through whatever lay ahead.  For once in my life, I really didn’t worry and fret about it.  I remembered a scripture:

Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. (Philippians 4:8 NASB)

God tells us what to think about. I concentrated on the part “whatever is true.”  I knew that I had the nodules and that the dr. wanted further tests.  That was true.  I did not know the outcome so it was not good for me to dwell on that.  So, I trusted the Lord, and by His mercy and grace the outcome was wonderful.  It could have been different, but in the meantime, I still wasn’t worring.  I’ve discovered worry doesn’t do me any good at all and it is actually a sin in God’s sight.  I know in my heart if my results had come out bad then the good Lord would have been right there beside me in whatever I had to face extending His care and grace.

This Thanksgiving my heart is truly full of giving thanks to our wonderful, Savior.

I pray each of you will have a Happy Thanksgiving.
